Lesser Whitethroat Pair at Brownside Braes
12 June 2009
Tom Byars reported finding a pair of Lesser Whitethroat at a nesting site at Brownside Braes this week.
The Lesser Whitethroat (Sylvia curruca) ranks as one of our rarest breeding birds in Renfrewshire. With a known population of only 1 - 3 pairs, this rare warbler is confined to the main 'core' breeding sites at Dykebar and Brownsie Braes.
However, over the past few years (2005 - 2007) no birds were recorded from this site and in 2008 only one transient male was recorded. So this sighting earlier this week is good news for the Scrub Enhancement Project which was implemented last autumn to improve the breeding habitat for this species .
